But within the spinel family, there are certain varieties so unusual, so optically remarkable, and so sought after by serious collectors that they deserve their own conversation entirely.

Cobalt Spinel β The Electric Blue

Most blue spinels owe their colour to iron β a colouring agent that tends to produce somewhat muted, steely blue tones. Cobalt spinel is entirely different.
Coloured by trace amounts of cobalt rather than iron, cobalt spinel displays a blue of extraordinary intensity β vivid, almost electric, and completely natural. The colour has been compared to fine Kashmir sapphire in its saturation, but with the brilliant, glassy optical quality that is characteristic of spinel rather than the velvety depth of sapphire. It is a genuinely breathtaking stone.
The finest cobalt spinels come from the Luc Yen region of Vietnam, where a small number of exceptional specimens have been found over the past few decades. Sri Lanka and Tanzania also produce cobalt-bearing spinels, though the Vietnamese material is generally considered the most intensely saturated.
Cobalt spinel is among the most sought-after varieties in the entire spinel family β and for good reason. That particular combination of natural, untreated colour with such extraordinary intensity is something very few gemstones can offer.
Vanadium Spinel β The Fiery Orange-Red
Where chromium produces the classic red and pink of most spinels, vanadium produces something quite different β a fiery, intense orange-red that sits in its own colour territory, warmer and more vivid than a chrome red but distinctly different from the orange of spessartine garnet.
Vanadium spinel is genuinely unusual within the spinel family. Most spinels are coloured primarily by chromium or iron β vanadium as the dominant colouring agent is relatively rare and produces a colour that is immediately distinctive to a trained eye. The orange-red quality has a particular warmth and fire that catches the light beautifully, especially in warm or incandescent lighting.

Jedi Spinel β The Neon Pink
The name alone is enough to stop you. Jedi spinel β named informally by gem traders for its almost otherworldly intensity β refers to the most vividly saturated pink-red spinels found in the Mogok Valley of Myanmar, specifically from the Man Sin mine.
What sets Jedi spinel apart from other pink and red spinels is its neon quality β a fluorescent-like brightness that makes the stone appear almost to glow from within, particularly in daylight where chromium fluorescence contributes additional red emission to the body colour. The effect is extraordinary and genuinely unlike any other pink gemstone.
Chromium is the colouring agent responsible for Jedi spinel's colour and fluorescence. The finest specimens display a vivid, pure pinkish-red with minimal iron β iron being the element that darkens and dulls the colour. A true Jedi spinel with strong colour and minimal iron content is considered among the most exceptional coloured gemstones available anywhere in the world.
Colour Change Spinel β Nature's Optical Illusion
Perhaps the most scientifically fascinating variety of all, colour change spinel shifts its apparent colour depending on the light source β typically from a blue or blue-grey in daylight to a purplish or reddish purple under incandescent light.
The phenomenon is caused by the interplay of vanadium and chromium within the crystal structure. These trace elements absorb different wavelengths of light depending on the light source, creating a stone that appears to have two entirely different identities depending on where it is seen. According to GIA, only approximately 1 in 10,000 spinels display a strong colour change β making genuine examples extraordinarily uncommon.
The finest colour change spinels come from Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Tanzania, with the most dramatic shifts β from electric blue to vivid raspberry or magenta β considered the most desirable.
What These Varieties Have in Common
Beyond their individual characters, what unites cobalt spinel, vanadium spinel, Jedi spinel and colour change spinel is the same quality that makes the spinel family so extraordinary β each one is a genuine gift from nature, with a colour and character that is entirely its own.
