When most people think of sapphire, they picture a rich, deep blue stone β the kind worn by royalty, set into engagement rings, and coveted for centuries. And while that image is entirely accurate, it tells only part of the story.
Sapphire is one of the most colour-diverse gemstones in existence. It comes in almost every colour imaginable β and understanding why is part of what makes it so fascinating.
The Mineral Behind the Stone β Corundum
Sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum β a crystalline form of aluminium oxide that, in its purest state, is completely colourless. Corundum requires a growth environment free of silicon, which is one of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust, making natural corundum relatively uncommon.
It is trace elements β tiny amounts of minerals that enter the crystal structure during formation β that transform colourless corundum into the vivid, varied gemstone we know as sapphire. The same mineral species, coloured red by chromium, becomes ruby. Every other colour belongs to the sapphire family.
A Rainbow of Colours β And What Causes Them
This is where sapphire becomes genuinely extraordinary. Depending on which trace elements are present and in what concentration, corundum produces an almost endless range of colours:
Blue β the most celebrated and well known, caused by the combination of iron and titanium. The more iron present, the deeper and darker the blue. The finest blue sapphires display a vivid, velvety saturation that has been the benchmark for blue gemstones for centuries.

Pink β caused by chromium, the same element responsible for ruby's red. The line between a deep pink sapphire and a ruby is one of degree rather than kind β a testament to how closely related these two stones truly are.

Yellow β iron on its own, without titanium, produces warm yellow tones ranging from pale lemon through golden honey to deep amber. Yellow sapphires have a particular warmth and brilliance that photographs beautifully.

Teal and green β iron in varying concentrations can push colour toward green, blue-green and teal, producing some of the most unusual and distinctive sapphires available. Teal sapphires in particular have a cool, complex character that sits unlike almost any other coloured stone.

Purple and violet β caused by vanadium, which also produces the fascinating colour change effect in certain specimens. Purple sapphires display a rich, complex hue that sits beautifully between blue and pink.

White and colourless β when very little trace element content is present, the result is a near-colourless sapphire β once popular as a diamond alternative and increasingly appreciated again in contemporary jewellery.
Parti sapphire β a particularly unusual phenomenon where two or more distinct colours appear within a single stone, caused by uneven distribution of trace elements during crystal growth. Australian sapphires are particularly celebrated for producing stunning parti specimens β typically displaying combinations of blue, green and yellow within one stone.

Hardness, Durability and Wearability
Sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs scale, making it the second hardest natural mineral after diamond. This extraordinary hardness makes it one of the most practical and durable choices for fine jewellery β genuinely resistant to scratching and suitable for all jewellery types including rings worn daily.

Origin and the Question of Treatment
Sapphires are found across the world β Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar, Tanzania, Thailand and Australia among the most significant sources. Each origin has its own character and colour signature, and origin can carry meaningful weight in the market for certain varieties.
The vast majority of sapphires on the market are heat treated β a widely accepted and long established practice that improves colour and clarity. Unheated sapphires, which retain their natural colour entirely without enhancement, are considered particularly special by collectors and command a meaningful premium. What We Love About Sapphire
Sapphire's breadth of colour is what makes it so endlessly compelling β and so personally expressive. A yellow sapphire speaks a completely different language from a teal one, which speaks differently again from a soft purple or a vivid pink. Few gemstones offer that range within a single species.
